ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION@#Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, many rumours have emerged. Given prior research linking rumour exposure to mental well-being, we conducted a nationwide survey to document the base rate of rumour exposure and factors associated with rumour vulnerability.@*METHODS@#Between March and July 2020, 1,237 participants were surveyed on 5 widely disseminated COVID-19 rumours (drinking water frequently could be preventive, eating garlic could be preventive, the outbreak arose because of bat soup consumption, the virus was created in an American lab, and the virus was created in a Chinese lab). For each rumour, participants reported whether they had heard, shared or believed each rumour.@*RESULTS@#Although most participants had been exposed to COVID-19 rumours, few shared or believed these. Sharing behaviours sometimes occurred in the absence of belief; however, education emerged as a protective factor for both sharing and belief.@*CONCLUSION@#Our results suggest that campaigns targeting skills associated with higher education (e.g. epistemology) may prove more effective than counter-rumour messages.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION@#As part of infection control measures for COVID-19, individuals have been encouraged to adopt both preventive (such as handwashing) and avoidant behavioural changes (e.g. avoiding crowds). In this study, we examined whether demographics predicted the likelihood that a person would adopt these behaviours in Singapore.@*METHODS@#A total of 1,145 participants responded to an online survey conducted between 7 March and 21 April 2020. We collected demographic information and asked participants to report which of 17 behaviour changes they had undertaken because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Regression analyses were performed to predict the number of behavioural changes (preventive, avoidant, and total) as a function of demographics. Finally, we sought to identify predictors of persons who declared that they had not undertaken any of these measures following the outbreak.@*RESULTS@#Most participants (97%) reported at least one behavioural change on account of the pandemic, with changes increasing with the number of local COVID-19 cases (@*CONCLUSION@#Our characterisation of behavioural changes provides a baseline for public health advisories. Moving forward, health authorities can focus their efforts on encouraging segments of the population who do not readily adopt infection control measures against COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Chronic Mucocutaneous Candidiasis is a non invasive persistent disease that has characteristics that include infection by Candida in skin, nails and mucous membranes, associated with several autoimmune diseases to genetic alterations in the immune system. The mutation of the AIRE autoimmune regulatory gene is the main cause of chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, although other genes have been totally or partially implicated with related clinical phenotypes. We have the case of a 15-year-old girl who entered to our clinic with immunosuppression, endocrinological alterations and Candida Albicans infection, which represented a diagnostic challenge.

ABSTRACT

To determine the prevalence of prediabetes and Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in the State of Zulia, Venezuela. Methods: A clinical, randomized, descriptive study was conducted using data from the Venezuelan Cardio-Metabolic Health Study (EVESCAM) of the Zulian region, including 525 adults of both genders. A risk factors questionnaire, history of DM, weight, height, body mass index (BMI) kg/m2, waist circumference in cm (CC), and blood pressure were measured. Blood samples were taken to determine of Glycaemia, lipid profile, and glucose tolerance test (GTT). Results were presented in tables and figures using averages and standard deviation, analyzed with the software SSPS statistical program, prevalence was calculated and adjusted by age and sex, alpha value lower than 0.05 (P <0.05) was considered significant. Results: A total of 404 subjects completed the evaluation: 126 (31.1%) men and 278 (68.8%) women, with a mean age of 49.6 ± 15.8 years; baseline glycaemia were 108.5 ± 28,9 and GTT 120.6 ± 37.2 mg/dl. The age-standardized diabetes prevalence was 16.0%; 19.9% in men and 12.1% in women (P = 0.029); and the age-standarized prevalence of prediabetes was 58.5%; 65.8 in men and 51.3 in women (P =0.005). Conclusions: Zulia´s population presented a high prevalence of prediabetes and diabetes mellitus. To implement an intervention program to halt it´s progress is of urgent need(AU)

ABSTRACT

Cyclosporine (CsA) analysis in blood from patients who had undergone bone marrow transplantation for various haematological disorders was done both by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and enzyme multiplied immunoassay technique (EMIT) and the results were compared. HPLC kit from Biorad Laboratories, USA, and EMIT kit from SYVA, UK, were used. The procedure for EMIT was slightly modified in-house to suit the Hitachi 704 discrete selective analyser. The CsA values obtained by these two methods correlated well within the therapeutic range (r value 0.96), HPLC method being most suitable outside the therapeutic range. Although HPLC is the ideal method for CsA, EMIT is quite suitable and can be adopted by any laboratory with an autoanalyser incorporating our modified procedure.
